People
People in the countryside quickly invite you to come and eat and/or stay overnight, especially if you are alone. In Alaska the people are very hospitable, friendly and helpful. They think cyclists are brave, sporty or crazy. They like to chat.
Bouke: "In the ten weeks that we cycled in the south, we met a lot of hospitality. We were spontaneously invited several times to come and have dinner or to stay. Not only in the countryside, but also, for example, near Washington. We soon decided gratefully accept all offers, unless they were obviously dubious in nature (which we haven't experienced!)."

Visa
Only Canadians and citizens of a few small islands can enter the U.S.A. without a visa. A few countries can apply for the Visa Waiver Program. Other countries need to apply for a standard visa.
We've heard rumours that you can't enter the U.S.A. if you've been to Iran before. Perhaps this is only the case when the stamp of Iran is still in your passport. Please verify this information if you have experience with this situation.

Sleeping
Staying with locals
It is also possible to stay overnight at private homes. For example, in New York you can sleep at people's homes through the Servas organization.
Bouke: "If you want to get in touch with American hospitality, you should become a member of Warmshowers.org, the organization of long-distance cyclists who offer each other free accommodation and a hot shower..."
Paul: "Warmshowers.org has a very large and extensive network in America, so we regularly had a free place to sleep, shower and sometimes dinner at nice people's homes. Especially in the big cities you can stay several nights more often."
John: "Sometimes you can pitch your tent in people's gardens. Just ring the bell!"
(Formal) camping
Raccoons are very adept at opening the food bag or stealing your shoes. secure such items or in the vestibule. ground squirrels (chipmunks) are great at gnawing through your ortliebs if they know they have food in them. Sometimes bear vaults are present. Take advantage of this!
The biker/hiker campgrounds (6-12 dollars p.p.) in the state and national parks are almost never full and usually cheap. You regularly meet cyclists who do the same route and that is nice and cozy. Unfortunately, they are often closed until May. Sometimes there is no shower, but there is toilet and water. In the states of California, Oregon, and Washington, there are many state campgrounds with hiker-biker sites, many with showers.
Camping on state campsites (primitive) ± 10 $ per day. There is one every 60-70 km. KOA Private Campgrounds: These are more expensive, busier, and duller but have more amenities such as unlimited clean showers, WiFi, washers and dryers; and sometimes a swimming pool. a pool KOA is easily $25; without $15.
In Alaska, the campgrounds are about 80 to 150 km apart.
Ho(s)tels
There are not too expensive motels in the towns. In every motel it is very common to take your bike to the room. always ask.
John: "Hotels and motels are everywhere, especially in the ugly business areas around cities (look for the exit of a highway and you will find them in bushes, surrounded by restaurants of all chains). In the centers of small towns you will find a hotel much less often; they are often nicer but also more expensive. Hotels and motels are also much cheaper than in Europe (especially with a favorable dollar-euro exchange rate) and in our experience with almost always good beds; in any case, the gap between camping and hotel prices in the US is much smaller than in Europe."
Wild camping
In most states it is (officially) not allowed. An exception is Alaska, where it is quite possible if there is water nearby. Wild camping along the border with Mexico can be dangerous because illegal immigrants cross at night with the help of people smugglers. Inquire with the border patrol about the local security situation.
In the national parks you can wild camp along the road with an easily available 'backcountry permit'. Usually 30m off the road.
Karin: "It is allowed in all National Forest and almost all BLM land. We have used it at least 100 times."
Paul: "In some states (Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah) on our route there was a lot of BLM land, public land and National Forest, where you can camp wild. In bear territory it is important to make a good 'bearhang' when camping in the wild, but also for racoons. At most campsites there are special 'bearlockers' in the bear/racoon area.

Safety
The US is a safe country, especially outside the cities.
Traffic
American cyclists (and also foreigners after a few weeks of cycling) will tell you without exception that so-called RVs (motorhomes of all shapes and sizes) are the greatest danger for cyclists. Then come trucks.
You increase your safety with a helmet, rear-view mirror, and a warning triangle on the back. A fluorescent flag on the left side of your rear bag helps to keep motorized traffic at a distance.
Bouke: "We have rarely felt unsafe in traffic. We did drive consistently with a striking orange 'road workers' vest. And of course always wear our helmet; Americans can't imagine driving without it.
Nature and animals
Due to bears, keep any food far from your tent. In National and state parks without a bear box you are required to bring a piece of rope to hang food in a tree. Pepper spray against bears; dogs and whatnot is legally available and often available at gunshops and outdoor stores.
Be careful with cactus needles in Colorado: they are very sharp and your tire gets punctured fast..

Transport
Airplane
Taking the bicycle with you differs per company. Always wise to inquire about the conditions when booking. In the so-called bushplanes within Alaska, the bicycle (without packaging) is allowed for free.
Train
Bringing your bike is possible on some Amtrak routes. Make a reservation and arrange early in advance.
Your bicycle can be taken on the metro of major cities without payment.. handy because the distances are very long; the traffic is busy and the metro is cheap. Note that the word 'metro' often also means metropolis in cities.
Bus
You can take your bike on Greyhound buses. Your bicycle must be in a bicycle box, which is not always available. If available, you pay 10-20 dollars per box.
In cities, your bike goes on the rack at the front of the bus or simply on the tram or metro for free. You have to put the bike on the rack yourself, you can ask the driver for instructions, but often bystanders are willing to help.
To and from many airports there are airport shuttles (taxi vans) that can take you a long way for about $ 20 (eg Las Vegas -> St George and Flagstaff -> Phoenix).
Boat
On ferries you are the first to board and first off by bike.

Food and drink
There is plenty of food available everywhere. Fresh fruit and vegetables, however, is very difficult, especially in sparsely populated areas. Gas stations and supermarkets in sparsely populated areas or along highways usually only have convenience food in their range.
Cooking fuel
The blue camping gas is unknown. They do have butane-propane canisters. Burner fuel is called white gas/white fuel or coleman fuel.
Bottle almost empty? ask someone who is mowing the lawn for some fuel (because jerry can). with a bit of luck you can also eat or sleep there.
Paul & Yvette: "We filled up our bottles at gas stations. They are not used to it, takes into account questions. For 20-30 cents you can cook for a week."
Supermarkets
The large supermarkets have a lot to offer. Try not to get lost :)
Paul & Yvette; "If you travel for a longer period of time in the country, it is useful to ask for a free membership card at the large supermarkets, this will give you nice discounts on the final amount."
Stalls on the street
Very good and cheap. Are subject to a license and therefore subject to the Commodities Actwet.
Restaurants
Restaurants are good and cheap, but not always pleasant. The portions are usually large. The service is often very fast; the bill comes pretty fast too. However, that is not meant to get you out the door!! Americans just don't usually eat out to dine for over an hour.
Eating vegetarian food in restaurants can be tricky. Especially in neighborhoods around universities a wide variety of restaurants with food from all over the world, vegetarian is also no problem here.
TIPS. gratuities are standard in the restaurant industry. Europeans are notorious for their bad tips.
a white-collar worker earns a fixed wage of about $500 a month (well below minimum wage!!) and the rest must be earned through tips. so just tip, guideline is 15-20%. a bad service does not always have to be the servant! in this case, tip 10-15% and leave 1 cent or 5 cents on the table.
No tipping required: starbucks, McD and other fast food chains, gas stations and their snack bars, chipotle, chickfilla, subway/quiznos and takeaway counters.
Do give tips: everything with service such as coffee / sandwich shops, pizza hut, dennys, arbys, applebees, steak house, sushi, chinese etc.
In Alaska it is advisable to bring food for 3 to 4 days, sometimes even for more days. Gas stations and lodges have food for sale (it is expensive there though). Distances between them vary between 80 and 150 km.
Drinkable water
Tap water is usually reliable, in large cities and desert areas it is chlorinated. Bottled drinking water is also readily available in less populated areas. In Alaska you have to filter the water beforehand. And often take water with you for 1 to 2 days.

Vaccinations & health
Make sure to get a comprehensive health insurance. medical expenses are very high in the usa. If you need urgent care, do not go to the ER (emergency room) but to an urgent care center. this because of the cost!

Other
Best time to cycle
The weather is most pleasant in spring and autumn, especially in the south. In autumn the forest areas are very beautiful.
Tip: in May - July it is best to cycle from east to west. If you cycle from west to east, some passes in the Rocky Mountains are closed until June because they are not yet free of snow. You can find more information about this on the forum.
Spare parts
There are many bike shops: every decent town has one. Only the distance between 2 bicycle repair shops is sometimes more than 300 km! Most bike shops have 26 inches in stock. 28" is usually found in cities.
if you need parts in the middle of nowhere, you can order them online and have them delivered or forwarded by UPS. UPS and Fedex also have stores where you can have your order delivered and picked up later. consult with the shop concerned first; sometimes $5 is charged for storage, etc.
There are only a few bike shops in Alaska, especially in the larger cities. This is not a problem for most materials.
Given the great distances and the few places in the Midwest, take spare spokes, tires and cables and of course tools.
Nice routes
- Adventure Cycling has many routes throughout the US. The great advantage of these routes is that they use quiet, safer roads. They publish maps on a bicycle-friendly scale over the entire route. See https://www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/
- The Crest Highway (Road 2) from Hollywood through the Gabrielle Mountains is beautiful, but tough to cycle. climb up to 3000 meters altitude.
