## **Food and drink **

- Hygiene in the tourist restaurants is usually quite good. Local restaurants in remote villages and in the larger towns in the east are very simple and less hygienic.
- Bhutan has a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Mangoes, oranges, bananas, etc. Bhutanese cuisine is not very spicy. The basis is rice, barley or potatoes. Home-grown vegetables are onions, cabbage, carrots, mushrooms and green asparagus. Western bhutan hotels offer wetter dishes. The meat comes from India by truck.
