## **About **

Cambodia is a poor country, but you can still go here as a cyclist. People are helpful and you can eat and find a place to stay overnight.

## **Visa **

You can simply get a visa at the border. At the border of Laos / Cambodia you are obliged to undergo a health check, of course for a fee. You also pay a little more for your visa

## **Sleeping **

### **Staying with locals**

The population is happy to offer you shelter. It is best to inquire at a restaurant. Men can also go to temples.

### **(Formal) camping**

There are no official campsites.

### **Ho(s)tels**

In the south, the distance from hotel to hotel is rarely more than approx. 100 km; you often cycle past a hotel. You will also find hotels in smaller towns. It is more difficult to find a place to sleep in the north and the east. When you go down the "main road" (relative concept in Cambodia) there are few or no hotels. The distance between hotels can then quickly be 2 days cycling (200 km).

### **Wild camping**

Wild camping is allowed. Of course you have to be very careful with landmines. Outside the infamous areas, however, it is very good to wildcamp. People are curious but they quickly leave you alone compared with other parts of Asia. There is always a place to be found in the jungle. You do have to watch out for many different insects (red ants!) That like to crawl into your things. You can spend the night on flonders on which lumberjacks used to sleep. They are about a meter from the ground and you can sleep well on them. Of course with a mosquito net.

## **Safety **

Mines remain a major problem. You are only safe on the main roads and in inhabited areas. Outside the inhabited areas it is wise to stay on the main road. Don't just cycle up a quiet road.

### **Traffic**

The quality of the roads varies from tight asphalt to dusty dirt roads that in the rainy season turn into mud puddles where you sink deep into. Cambodia is increasingly successful in making roads more passable with help from abroad.

Traffic is crazy, but only Pnohm Penh is really busy, but if you go with the flow it is very doable. The speeds are generally low and there is enough space for making mistakes. The fellow road users anticipate that and also expect you to anticipate their mistakes. If you do that, it will be fine.

### **Criminality**

Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are notorious for robberies. Keep your belongings with you, and make sure you get back to your sleeping place on time.

## **Transport **

### **Train**

The train is even cheaper than the bus, but very slow.

### **Bus**

There are not many buses, often only in the morning. Many buses run on the better roads. If you want to keep your bike intact, you don't want to transport it there. Buses are very cheap. In the luxurious Angkor Express double decker buses from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap V.V and from Phnom Penh to Sihanouk V.V. can cycle along. There are even mopeds on the bus.

### **Boat**

From Thailand you can enter the country at Shihanoukville.

## **Food and drink **

**Cooking fuel**

If you use a burner, there is enough fuel to be found, the question is whether it is clean. However, the prices are so low that you cannot cook for it yourself.

**Supermarkets**

Soft drinks and beer are available everywhere.

**Street markets**

Cambodia is one of the few countries where you can get ice (frozen water) in the middle of nowhere. A relic from the time of the french. Every morning there are small "Ice factories" where a load of frozen water is transported every morning to cool boxes in restaurants.

**Restaurants**

Provided you are not too picky, you can eat well and cheaply in any decent village. Cambodians like it spicy like the thai. There is a difference: in cambodia you get the (hot) spices served on a separate dish. As a vegetarian, there are often only one or two choices left.

## **Vaccinations & health **

Cambodia is notorious for diseases such as malaria, TBS and dengue fever. Inquire well before your trip about the health measures you can take. There are small clinics in the interior, but they can offer you little more than a painkiller and a plaster. In addition, there are not many doctors in the interior. Previously, everyone with a little education was murdered by the Khmer Rouge and many doctors were also covered. The situation is only slowly improving.

## **Other **

**Best bike period**

Seasons (dry / wet)

The monsoons prevail from may to october: wet and hot.

It can still rain heavily in november, although it is cooler than the months before.

Tourist high season

Most tourists come to the country in december and january, because it is then “cool” and dry.

Average temperature

December and january are the most suitable months for cycling because it is "Cool" and dry. When it comes to cool, you should think of maximum temperatures of around 30 degrees.

February, march and april are the hottest months with temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees.

**Spare parts**

You can hardly buy spare parts. So bring everything yourself. You can fix and inflate tires (especially French valves) everywhere, but do not expect any more advanced technology. People want to help and sit everywhere, but they cannot provide service to a bicycle (see what they ride themselves). Most villages have a workshop where they can (try to) repair your bicycle. Consider, for example, moped business.
