[**View on the map**](https://cycleplanet.org/map?at=18.735693,-70.162651,7)

## **About **

The Dominican Republic is a beautiful country with a nice variety of dry landscapes with thorn bushes and tree-like cacti and more tropical mountain and hilly landscapes with meadows and palm and banana trees. High in the mountains there were still some cloud forests with a lot of precipitation.

## **People **

The people are friendly, there are many people who call and wave Americano or Gringo to you. People call out to you but are never pushy. Occasionally you will also be asked for money (especially children). Spanish is the main language, few people speak English. Many people like it when you take pictures of them.

## **Sleeping **

### **Ho(s)tels**

There are hotels in most cities and towns. The hotels were expensive for their quality. 70 Peso for a very primitive hotel with no running water in a wooden house to 550 peso for a hotel where hot water supply was not working and the light could only go on in the bathroom. In places with more bathers such as Santa Barbara and Punta Cana, the hotels were not more expensive but much more luxurious.

## **Safety **

DR is an easy and safe country that is large enough for a bicycle ride of several weeks.

## **Food and drink **

Food is available in every village except on the Pedernales-Puerto Escondido road.

**Drinkable water**

You can drink tap water, although this is not recommended. In Santa Domingo it's better to buy water because there is a lot of chlorine in the water and it's not tasty. Bottled water is inexpensive and available in many places.
