## **About **

Appropriately nicknamed 'The land of the thousand lakes', Finland is truly a gem in the Nordics with its exquisite nature, varied wildlife, and picturesque landscapes. Many cycling paths, the hospitality of the local people, and a huge number of places waiting to be explored provide for unique cycling opportunities for bike touring or bike packing all year round (do not forget that winters can get quite rough).

## **People **

It might not be an easy task to strike up a conversation with Finns at first, but once you manage to get to know them, you will find out that they are just a polite and straightforward bunch who are extremely friendly and willing to help you out.

## **Visa **

People from the EU and several other countries don't need a visa. All other people need a Schengen visa to visit Finland.

The visa is valid for 90 days (no more than 3 months within a 6 months period) and allows you to travel through all Schengen countries. In some cases, there is a possibility for an extension.

For more information, you can also visit this [**www.infofinland.fi**](https://www.infofinland.fi/en/moving-to-finland/non-eu-citizens/a-short-stay-in-finland).

## **Sleeping **

### **(Formal) camping**

There are few campsites and they are often far apart. Almost every Finnish campsite (“leirintäalue”) is located on the water (river, lake or sea). They are well equipped for itinerant cyclists with washing facilities, hot water, free hot showers, covered cooking and dining area, toilets, sauna (usually included in the price), a fire pit, children's playground, ...

They offer log cabins, comparable to hikers' cabins, for rent (useful in rainy weather) and you can purchase a Scandinavian camping card (6 euros), which gives you a discount on various campsites. Some campsites do close in mid or late August.

Campsites always have good showers, always a kitchen, often a sauna (sometimes free). Campfire every night and this is a good place to socialize. Camping costs between 15-20 euros per night (fixed amount + per person an amount). Camping card gives a discount of approximately 2 euros at a time and costs 7 euros. Is a good investment.

### **Wild camping**

Wild camping is allowed anywhere. Many pests in the woods (mosquitoes, flies, hornets). Uimarantas are ideal (wild) camping pitches. Often a toilet and a table. Very precise and informative maps for Finland - [**https://retkikartta.fi/?lang=en**](https://retkikartta.fi/?lang=en) . Switch layers and zoom in to see free camping places.

### **Criminality**

Petty crimes such as pickpocketing do occur in crowded areas and during the summer tourist season.

Bicycle theft is the most common type of theft. However, after a long period of increase, the number of bicycle thefts has declined. (Finland 2020 Crime & Safety Report).

For more information, visit the [**website**](https://www.osac.gov/Content/Report/ba06f323-8bba-44b4-a3b2-195546ab1df4).

### **Nature and animals**

Finland's got a lot to offer. Diverse nature, with its islands, lakes, as well as Lapland covered in autumn colours, wildlife and much more.

Although, there are a few things to be prepared for, such as infuriating mosquitos during the summer months, especially in Lapland or encountering wildlife.

## **Transport **

### **Airplane**

Finavia operates 21 airports in Finland (but there are 27 in total) out of which Helsinki-Vantaa, Oulu, and Rovaniemi are the most frequented. Domestic flights are operated by Finnair, Norwegian, and SAS.

For more information, visit the website: [**finavia.fi**](https://www.finavia.fi/en/airports)

### **Train**

Trains in Finland are operated by VR Group (a government-owned railway company). You are allowed to take bicycles on certain trains. Be aware that trains do not run all across the country. The network ends in Kolari (long-distance trains). Trains are generally on time, comfortable, and have power outlets, and free Wi-Fi.

For more information, visit the [**website**](https://www.vr.fi/en/railway-stations-and-routes).

Before you buy a ticket, make sure that bicycles are allowed aboard a train to your destination!

### **Bus**

Coach route network in Finland extends far and wide, covering around 90 per cent of public roads.

If you need to continue with your bike further than a train can take you, coaches will help you reach your final destination. (Sitting on a bus in Finland is an experience in itself with the scenic surroundings you get to experience on smaller roads).

## **Food and drink **

In Finland, everyone is allowed to pick wild berries and mushrooms almost anywhere. The best season is from mid-July until late September. Just make sure that you follow the straightforward but crucial rules for pickers and safety.

There are various dishes to try while visiting Finland such as Karjalanpiirakka (Karelian pasty - rice pie), Leipajuusto (Finnish squeaky cheese), Salmiakki (salty liquorice), Poronkäristys (sauteed reindeer), Kalakeitto (Fish soup), Hernekeitto (split pea soup), Salmiakki Koskenkorva (Pre-mixed liqueur), Lakka (Liqueur produced with Cloudberry) and many other dishes and drinks.

For more information about berry and mushroom picking, visit the website [**www.nationalparks.fi**](https://www.nationalparks.fi/berryandmushroompicking#:~:text=The%20best%20mushroom%20season%20is%20usually%20from%20August%20to%20October.&text=In%20rainy%20conditions%20you'll,for%20an%20easier%20clean%2Dup.)

Cooking fuel

The "camping gaz prick cans" (at the do it yourself, tool department) are available in the very large supermarkets.

## **Vaccinations & health **

The biggest problem are the many mosquitoes - we ourselves had anti-mosquito milk, a gel from Care Plus based on 30% Deet - in Lapland we bought an extra (effective) product, namely Johnson OFF! "Tervantuoksu" o. OFF is available everywhere in various forms (spray, gel, marker, liquid, aerosol, candle). Etono (20 mg) can be bought at pharmacies and helps against itching. Brewer's yeast should help but didn't.

One person is "tastier" for the mosquitoes than another. Type of forest matters whether you have a lot or little trouble. Hornets can also be very annoying.
