## **About **

Guinea, also known as Guinea-Conakry, to avoid any confusion with one of the other three Guinea name carriers. I have to be honest with you, I crossed the coastline of the country in a high tempo due to circumstances, so I don’t know all ins and outs, but let this give you a small direction.

## **Sleeping **

### **Staying with locals**

Not very common, only big cities offer CS hosts.

### **(Formal) camping**

There are no campsites, but there is plenty of space for the tent. In some areas, however, it is difficult to find a camping place due to the burning of forests, which is happening there on a large scale. You can of course put your tent on a burnt piece, but then all the camping equipment will be covered by the black ash. Camping in villages is almost always possible if you ask the "chef du village".

### **Ho(s)tels**

Guinea is a country that is not geared towards tourism, the hotels that exist lack any luxury. The exception is Conakry, where staying overnight in one of the luxury hotels costs a fortune. But overall, some villages have accomodation. Think about 200.000 to 300.000 GNF for the cheapest price, so probably it’s more.

### **Wild camping**

Possible, but there are lots of people everywhere, so consider asking permission first.

## **Safety **

Generally safe to cycle, be cautious in big cities.

## **Food and drink **

In Guinea people eat rice with a sauce almost 3 times a day. This is the cheapest food. A piece of meat already makes it twice as expensive, but of course still cheap. There are 2 types of coffee. Nescafé, the instant coffee and Caffee Noir. This coffee is consumed from very small bowls and is very strong.

You'll find plenty of bars where you can get egg with bread for about 7.000 GNF. A local dish is "fou fou" and a local drink is made from ginger.

## **Vaccinations & health **

- Yellow fever, DTP and hepatitis A vaccinations are recommended and sometimes mandatory.
- Sometimes a Cholera statement is needed (stamp).
- Malaria occurs throughout the country all year round.

## **Other **

**Best time to cycle**

Guinea is one of the wettest countries in West Africa, especially the coastal region. The best cycling time is from the middle of November to the beginning of May. From December onwards, the harmatan rises, which can cause a lot of dust.

**Spare parts**

The local bicycle repairers often destroy more of a western bicycle than it does whole. Tires can be properly fixed, but this takes quite some time.
