# Luxembourg

**Schengen**[**View on the map**](https://cycleplanet.org/map?at=49.815273,6.129583,8)

## **About **

Luxembourg can easily be seen as an odd duck compared to its neighboring countries. It's so small that you can pass it in a single day, however, there are definetly some castles you might want to see.

## **People **

Luxembourgers have their own language, Letzeburgs, related to German. The official language is French, but you can also use German well and English is also mastered by a part of the population.

## **Visa **

People from EU, Canada, Japan and USA don't need a visa. All other people need a Schengen visa to visit this country. You can find more information here [**https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/tourist-schengen-visa/**](https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/tourist-schengen-visa/). The visa is valid for 90 days, and allows you to travel through all Schengen countries.

## **Sleeping **

### **Staying with locals**

Zimmer frei: This formula is also very popular in Luxembourg. Usually the operators of small guesthouses try to attract tourists in this way. A good alternative if you want to be more comfortable in the evening. Private individuals and farms also try to earn some extra money in this way.

Gite d'etappe: Just like in France and Wallonia, you also have them in Luxembourg. In addition, there is also a form of farm tourism that can be interesting for cyclists. A list of these different forms can be obtained from the Association pour la Tourisme Rural, 48 route de Bastogne, L-9176 Niederfeulen, tel 00352-82720.

### **(Formal) camping**

Luxembourg has the highest camping density in the world. Usually these campsites are full of overnight campers all year round, but our own experience shows that there is always a place for individual cyclists. Be careful not to camp too close to the shore; in a short time the water can rise considerably and the terrain is easily submerged.

### **Ho(s)tels**

The absence of individual shower cubicles is characteristic of Luxembourg youth hostels. There are showers, but mostly in the form we know from our swimming pools. Fortunately, the rural youth hostels still have that cozy atmosphere of yesteryear. Some still have old-fashioned dormitories, but usually there are also small rooms. You can always count on a decent dinner after a day of exercise. The youth hostels are within walking distance of each other and are often used by hikers.

It seems that children up to the age of eight are not welcome everywhere; so inform well in advance.

### **Wild camping**

Although there are good spots to be found, it is difficult to camp wild. Close attention is paid to the leftovers of nature. In any case, make sure you get out very early in the morning, because lumberjacks are relentless when they catch you. Don't expect to get permission from private owners anytime soon to camp on their property.

## **Food and drink **

Food and drink are everywhere. At many cafes you can eat good hot food between midday and evening for not too much money.
