## **People **

Malaysia is a very hospitable country, with a very friendly and non-intrusive population. Cyclists find them very cute. Muslims: 60%, Chinese: 30%; Hindu: 10%.

## **Sleeping **

### **(Formal) camping**

There are no camping facilities in Malaysia.

### **Ho(s)tels**

The hotels are between 50 and 120 km apart. Although Malaysia is a developed country, the quality of the budget hotels can be disappointing. In Thailand, for example, you get a much better hotel for the same money. Exceptions are the tourist centers.

### **Wild camping**

Free camping is allowed.

## **Safety **

### **Traffic**

West Malaysia on the west coast has a fairly dense road network. The main roads are often very busy here. It is quite possible to look for smaller roads. Many small roads along irrigation canals and rivers are also paved. These are perfect cycle paths. The roads are generally paved and of good quality

## **Transport **

### **Train**

Bicycles cannot be taken on the train between Georgetown and KL/Singapore. It is possible to let the bicycle go with a separate carco train. This still has to be transhipped in KL. Very cumbersome and expensive. The bus is a better alternative. Note that if you take the bus to Singapore you get off before the border and take the road for the mopeds through the border.

### **Bus**

In the air-conditioned bus from Georgetown to Singapore, the bus could be taken in the luggage hold for a small extra charge

## **Food and drink **

**Stalls on the street**

Eating in many food stalls is fine (no problem at all). Fruits are plentiful. There is a choice of all kinds of dishes (Chinese, Malay or Indian). In the strict Islamic region around Kota Baru, beer is only available at Chinese restaurants.

There is a lot of choice for vegetarians. On the west coast you will find (Chinese) vegetarian restaurants (restoran sayuran). In the larger towns there are restaurants with display cases where you can choose from, there are many tasty vegetable dishes. Also on the night market you will find enough vegetarian but less extensive.

**Drinkable water**

Tap water varies in quality, usually drinkable and safe. Drinking water is available in bottles (from half a liter to 2 liters). In many cities there are water taps where you can fill up with liters of filtered water very cheaply. This water is not cooled, but much cheaper than bottled water and you can just put your own water bottles under it.

## **Vaccinations & health **

Malaysia has very good health facilities.

**Common Illnesses**

- Tuberculosis.
- The dengue mosquito is active in the cities. This mosquito is active during the day. Remedy: use Deet (on top of the sunburn).
- Malaria is almost non-existent in Malaysia, only in the border area with Borneo (Indonesia).

## **Other **

**Best time to cycle**

On the east coast it is dry and beautiful in summer (light south wind), the same applies to the west coast in autumn and winter. The wet time on the east coast is between October and February, while that on the west coast is from September to December. At the end of January and the beginning of February there is a strong northerly wind on the east coast.

**Spare parts**

Bicycle shops can be found in all (medium) large cities, with very decent equipment and sometimes even really good! But also in small villages you can get a 26 "tire.
