## **People **

The people are a bit distant. Especially in Transnistria, which has seceded from Moldova. The detachment is probably left over from the time of the Soviet Union. Very few tourists come to Moldova, especially the countryside. People are not used to tourists.

Tom: "Although Moldova is the poorest country in Europe, I never had the idea that people wanted to rip me off. It simply does not occur to them that they can ask twice as much for a bar of chocolate. In The people of Transnistria were a bit surly. People who work at "official" agencies, such as customs and the police, all want to make money from you and come up with all kinds of excuses to get money. Abuse of power is not shunned."

Romanian is spoken in Moldova. Because Moldova used to be part of the Soviet Union, many people also speak Russian. Mostly Russians live in Transnistria that seceded from Moldova. Only Russian is spoken there.

Not many people speak a foreign language like English or German. The people who do speak English or German generally live in Chisinau. Incidentally, it is usually the young people who speak English or German.

## **Visa **

Some nationalities can enter Moldova without a visa for up to 90 days.

## **Sleeping **

### **(Formal) camping**

There are few campsites in Moldova. The quality is probably such that it is better to go wild camping.

### **Wild camping**

It is not known whether wild camping is legal. There are plenty of opportunities for wild camping in the countryside.

## **Safety **

Security is good in Moldova.

Cyclists passing through from Chisinau to Odessa can pass through Transnistria. The distance is about 50 kilometers and is almost flat. However, it is wise to set aside a whole day for it. It is quite a test of your patience to cross the "border". The speed can be increased the more willing you are to pay. Euros and dollars are always welcome.

Wilbert Thoonen: "On the way from Chisinau to Odessa, there is also a smaller alternative route so you don't have to go through Transnistria."

In Transnistria, the "government apparatus" is corrupt from the outset.

Officials see tourists as a source of additional income. The police will quickly try to blame you for a certain crime, driving on the left unnecessarily or cycling on the road. It is normal to negotiate the amount of the fine with the police. Be firm that you have done nothing wrong (although that is sometimes difficult, because the police do not "understand") English. The longer you keep it up, the more the fine goes down. Keep in mind that Transnistria is not recognized by any country. There is therefore no embassy that can stand up for you if you end up in jail for whatever reason.

### **Traffic**

There is little traffic on the road until about 100 kilometers before Chisinau. It is busy in Chisinau and the surrounding area. It is not too busy to not be able to cycle normally. However, care must be taken for buses. If they see customers standing by the road, they can suddenly cut you off. In rural areas, drivers generally honk when they want to overtake you. It is intended as a warning, not to push you into the verge.

### **Corruption**

There are a lot of police around. These are mainly found at the major intersections and in the capital Chisinau. There also seem to be corrupt police officers looking to supplement their meager salaries. It is wise to always have (copies of) your passport with you. This is regularly requested. You can be fined if you can't show them.

## **Food and drink **

**Supermarkets**

Most villages do have a small shop where the basic products, such as bread, drinks, spreads, pasta and beer, are available.

**Restaurants**

Restaurants can be found along the main roads and in the larger towns. These usually have a fairly extensive menu. For about 5 euros you can get a meal with meat, potatoes, salad and a beer. There are enough restaurants to have a hot meal every day.

**Drinkable water**

In some areas there are wells along the road. In general, this water is pure and suitable for drinking. The locals do that too. Mineral water is also sold in the shops. In general, that is mineral water with bubbles.

## **Other **

**Best time to cycle**

In summer it can be very hot in Moldova. Temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius are no exception. The temperatures in spring and autumn are more pleasant.

**Spare parts**

Moldova is a poor country, with only one real city. Parts can probably be obtained in Chisinau, but that should not be assumed. It is wise to bring spare parts yourself.
