## **About **

Do you love mountains but do you think the Alps and the Pyrenees are too busy? Then Montenegro is definitely your country! The roads are quiet, the slopes are green and at the top of the mountains it is also a great place to stay in summer.

## **People **

The people are friendly and easily approachable. Foreigners are received as guests. They like it when you talk to them. They are happy to talk about their views on the politics of their country. Many Serbs in Montenegro voted against, but you don't notice much animosity between the population groups. Partly because the detachment from Serbia took place peacefully through a referendum.

The Montenegrins themselves do not cycle at all. Cycling tourists find them something special. Minko: recumbent bicycles are quite a special appearance. In every village I was 'laughed at' by the children. As soon as I stopped somewhere, they gathered around me and the recumbent was admired. Sometimes all that attention became too much for us, especially when they would stop in the middle of the road and try to stop you for a test drive. Once I was stopped in the middle of a descent and I was violently pulled off my bike by a drunk driver.

Eric van Dijken: "Montenegro is very mountainous and therefore people are used to an isolated life. The character of the population also seemed a bit stiff to us, but not unfriendly."

## **Visa **

Some nationalities can enter Montenegro without a visa for up to 90 days.

## **Sleeping **

### **Staying with locals**

You will come across signs along the road with Sobe, Apartment, Rooms or Zimmer on them. In smaller towns: just ask people along the way. They will then walk with you to the relevant house.

### **(Formal) camping**

There are a few campsites on the coast and inland you can pitch your tent at bungalow parks (eko katun lodges). The prices of the campsites are not in proportion to the facilities. In some locations the toilet was gross. Enclosed shower rooms are a rarity. The owner of the campsite often lives across the street or a little further on. You better go and see him before you set up your tent. This is to prevent you from being surprised by the prices they charge.

There is no camping site in Kotor. There is a small private camp site in the village of Stoliv, about 7 km north on the western shore of the bay. There are a number of campsites in Zabljak. There is a small campsite in Rozaje; in Kolasin cheap rooms.

### **Ho(s)tels**

There are plenty of hotels along the coast. Hostels: in Budva, Podgorica and Kotor. In the mountains you have many Eko Katun lodges. These are bungalows that you can buy for about 10 euros pp. can rent, but often you can also pitch your tent there for 2 euros pp and use the sanitary facilities (shower/toilet).

### **Wild camping**

Jurriaan: "I've camped wild twice, both times I was in plain sight but it's not much of a point there; In any case, the police won't be making a fuss anytime soon. It may be a little less convenient in terms of safety, but I felt perfectly comfortable in both places.

## **Safety **

The country is absolutely safe. Crime is much lower there than in the Western world. You can walk quietly on the street at night and there are no land mines anywhere. There are also no tensions between the population groups. The police have been instructed to let tourists have their way as much as possible.

### **Traffic**

For a tunnel more or less the Montenegrins do not turn their hand around, there are very many. Most are unlit. It is therefore strongly recommended to bring a good lamp.

You can generally avoid the busy roads. Jurriaan: "I crossed the country from the south (Sukobin) to the north (Serbia) and ended up on a main road a total of 1 time where it was really busy, and that could have been avoided. There are many good roads through the interior with no tunnels, with almost no car traffic, good asphalt, and often right through the forest. It is a tough climb on these roads."

### **Nature and animals**

For what it's worth: The locals warn about bears. During the Balkan War (until 1995), many of these animals fled to the forests of Montenegro and more or less remained there ever since. It seems to happen occasionally that they can also be seen on the road.

## **Food and drink **

The Montenegrins eat much more fish than meat, in combination with wine and olive oil. You can get good vegetable salads. Also many pizzas. In the mountains there is more meat than fish (mainly trout) on the menu. In general, the meat is a lot and very fatty. The national drink is the Rakija (gin made from white grapes).

**Supermarkets**

There are plenty of supermarkets and shops along the coast and major towns. Outside of that, it is wise to stock up for a day.

**Restaurants**

Restaurants can be found mainly in the touristic places along the coast.

**Drinkable water**

The tap water is perfectly drinkable. Much water comes directly from mountain springs, contains little lime and is nice and fresh.

## **Other **

**Nice routes**

- The areas along the coast are beautiful. We (Paules and Ilona) went there at the beginning of July 2009. We found the coastal region very touristy. My idea is that the mass tourism has discovered Montenegro.
- Especially the Bay of Kotor (Unesco World Heritage) is unique. There is no campsite itself in Kotor, but there is a small private campsite in the village of Stoliv, about 7 km north on the western shore of the bay.
- The mountainous area around Lake Skadar is also a pure gem, well worth exploring.
- Ivo: "Kotor was the highlight of my trip through Montenegro for me. For literature freaks, the bridge over the Tara is of course a bridge that you absolutely have to cycle over."
- Minko: "Cycled through Montenegro for a week in 2010. Almost the entire route was breathtakingly beautiful. From Dubrovnik to Kotor (along the whole bay, recommended). Then from Kotor up a long climb to the Lovcen National Park to the mausoleum, views are sublime. Descend via Centinje to Rijeka Crnojevica along the Skadar lake, also very beautiful. Via Podgorica and NW Albania to Gusinje. The view from the Grbaje valley on the Prokletije mountains should also be beautiful but we had too much cloud. The route from Andreijevica via Kolasin, Zabljak, the Durmitor NP and Pluzine to Bosnia was one of the highlights of the trip.

**Best time to cycle**

At all times of the year you can enjoy cycling in the areas along the coast, because of the Mediterranean climate. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant. In winter it is not pleasant cycling in the mountains because of the cold and snow.

**Spare parts**

There is no cycling in Montenegro, not even on the flat road around the Bay of Kotor. In Podgorica there are a number of bicycle repair shops that are good.
