## **About **

Cycling in Oman is wonderful, nice weather and very friendly people. When it comes to sightseeing, Oman has to rely mainly on its natural beauty: The extensive desert landscapes, Dhofar that turns into a green rolling oasis in summer during the khareef (the local monsoon), Masirah, Wadi Tiwi, Jebel Akdar and Jebel Shams are beautiful . Muscat is not super special, an afternoon in the souk and a tour to the palace are nice, but the real 'Middle East' feeling is a bit lacking.

## **People **

Population consists of 50% Omani and 50% guest workers. The Omani are very friendly and helpful.

Arabic is the official language. Urdu is also widely spoken. In Muscat people speak reasonable English, in other big cities less, and outside of that hardly any.

## **Visa **

Quite a lot of nationalities can enter Oman without a visa.

## **Sleeping **

### **Staying with locals**

People regularly invite you to spend the night at their home.

### **(Formal) camping**

There are no official campsites.

### **Ho(s)tels**

Hotels are often expensive and limited to large cities. Often minimum price of 20 euros per night for a simple room without breakfast (info 2006). There are more hotels outside the major cities than listed in travel guides. However, they are difficult to find and the quality seems to be moderate to poor.

### **Wild camping**

It is often difficult to find a good camping site. It is either rocky and not flat or strong in sight from a village or the road. Furthermore, free camping is not a problem, there is more than enough space in the desert, and a kilometer from the road there is no one left to find you. If that happens, you will be left alone.

## **Safety **

The sultanate has no Muslim extremism. In fact, it is known for religious tolerance. Women alone are almost never harassed by male Omanis.

In Dhofar (South Oman) there are still a few land mines from the civil war (1960s to early 1970s) that are off the beaten track.

Douwe en Blanche: "We camped there almost every night without any problems. People also say that there is no theft and you are safe everywhere. Only the traffic is something to watch out for, the Omani love to race"

### **Traffic**

It is often busy on the main roads (mainly roads in a radius of 30 km around Seeb Airport are very annoying), but on the smaller roads it is quiet. Motorways are easier to cycle on than through roads because they have a wide hard shoulder or a quiet parallel road.

## **Food and drink **

Food and drink is very cheap. During Ramadan, eating and drinking in public is prohibited. However, as long as you do it inconspicuously, it's no problem.

**Cooking fuel**

Campinggaz is readily available in the major cities, gasoline is dirt cheap and small tanks are topped up with a big smile without any problems.

**Markets**

In the desert you will only find small markets where nothing is actually for sale. From Duqm you can find reasonably assorted supermarkets again. Hygiene can be called excellent compared to other Arab countries

**Supermarkets**

Shops are sparse, especially in the desert areas (every 100km with a little luck), but the locals are very friendly and regularly stop you for something to eat or drink. This applies to the many oil workers who find it interesting to chat with you during lunch in the canteen.

All the ingredients for a good meal are available in the shops, but pay attention to the shelf life! Bread, in particular, can be spoiled. Prices are low. You get the best food at people's homes.

**Restaurants**

Eating in small restaurants along the road is good if you like Indian, often basic, but fine. The choice of restaurants is limited. In many smaller places there is nothing to be found, in large cities the offer is better.

**Drinkable water**

Douwe en Blanche: "Almost everywhere you will find a mosque where you can tap cooled drinking water and shower water. Sometimes the drinking water facilities have filters." Tap water is usually drinkable as it comes from great depths in the desert.

## **Vaccinations & health **

**Mandatory vaccinations**

If you come from a yellow fever area, a vaccination is mandatory.

**Useful vaccinations for cyclists**

A DTP vaccination is recommended, as is protection against Hepatitis A. Typhoid fever vaccination is recommended when traveling longer than 2 weeks.

## **Other **

**Best time to cycle**

December and January is a great time to visit Oman, although there are sometimes cold winds. During the day temperatures up to about 30 degrees, in the morning about 15. In the rainy season from June to September it is unpleasant to stay in the south.

\*\*Spare parts
 \*\*

There are many bicycle repair shops to be found in case of an emergency, but they will generally only be used to bicycles of the India model. In Muscat (Raleigh shop) and Sur there are bicycles and bicycle shops based on the western model. If you are looking for a specific spare part, it is better to look for it in Dubai (Wolfi's Bikeshop is a small paradise in that regard).
