## **About **

Romania has a lot to offer cyclists. There are mountains (Carpathians), hills (Transylvania) and plains (Danube basin). The Carpathians are densely forested, even bears and wolves still live there. Transylvania is a hilly landscape without steep slopes. The coast of the Black Sea seems to be beautiful and varied. Cycling in the countryside means pedaling from village to village, often with wooden houses with trees and geese. Many traditional costumes are still worn in the countryside on public holidays and Sundays. Some cities have drab large flats and industrial areas. However, there are also some beautiful cities such as Sighisoara.

## **People **

The people are very nice, interested and hospitable. They don't understand that you don't have a car. Making contacts is quite easy, the people are generally helpful and interested. Some invite you to their home.

When you want to thank people by giving them some money, sometimes you have to push. Romanians sometimes don't take your payment, even if they are very poor. Keep pushing. Only after two or three offers will people accept it. Otherwise, just put the money on the table.

In churches and monasteries you have to be properly dressed.

There are quite a lot of beggars and other penniless people whose poverty is dire. Many people are also drinking. These people can be pushy at times.

Romanians hardly speak foreign languages. If they do, it is often Italian or French. However, more and more young people speak English or German, especially in the cities.

## **Visa **

Romania is not yet part of the Schengen area, but are members of EU. However, they have a visa policy that is based on the Schengen policy.

[**Schengen Area**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Area "Schengen Area") visa lists.

Schengen Area

## **Sleeping **

### **(Formal) camping**

There are few campsites in Romania. You will find them mainly in border cities, Bucharest and the Black Sea. Incidentally, the number of campsites on the Black Sea is falling rapidly: they are making way for expensive resorts.

### **Ho(s)tels**

Rustic House, Turnu Magurele just off Eurovelo 6. 3 rooms for rent in annex of private house, secure bike store, mechanical help of needed and very hospitable hosts. Traditional meals available. WiFi, laundry. Can book through AirBnb.

### **Wild camping**

You allowed to camp in the wild, but it is (as everywhere) advisable to take the necessary precautions (put your tent out of sight, do not light a fire). In certain parts of the country it is difficult to find a good camping spot due to ribbon development. Setting up your tent on a meadow (hayland) is not appreciated by the locals. Wild campers are strictly monitored on the Black Sea.

## **Safety **

Romania is a safe country to cycle at.

### **Traffic**

It is not recommended to cycle the Transfagarasan at the weekend as this road is very popular among Romanian tourists and it is one big stream of cars.

Main roads are not recommended due to the unreliable behavior of motorists. Compared to a few years ago, there has been an increase in traffic, especially on the main roads to Hungary. There are not many highways, which means that a lot of (heavy) transport travels on provincial roads. Where horse and carriage used to have plenty of space, they and you as a cyclist are pushed off the road. They don't take much into account, you just have to step aside. Great risks are often taken during overtaking maneuvers. Coming straight at you on the left lane is quite normal. A mirror is recommended.

However, side roads are still quiet, but their quality is sometimes deplorable. You will also encounter other traffic on very small roads / cart tracks about once every half hour. If not: GO BACK! Either you end up in a meadow, or the road has been washed away or you sink up to your armpits in the soggy clay a little further on.

## **Transport **

### **Train**

There are different types of trains: 'Personal', which run very slow and stop at every molehill, and 'Accelerat' which are faster. You buy train tickets for each train you take. The ticket also shows the train number and (usually) your seat. So if you have to change trains, you have two (or more) tickets.

### **Bus**

Many coaches drive between the larger cities that also visit small villages, it was no problem for us to take the bicycles with us at the bottom of the luggage hold.

## **Food and drink **

**Supermarkets**

In the larger villages there is usually a shop. Only in the mountains it can happen that you can't find a shop for one or two days.

**Stalls on the street**

In somewhat larger towns you will find small shops with savory treats, such as covrigi (savory pretzels) and filled pancakes.

**Restaurants**

There are cheap restaurants, but the quality is often mediocre. There are almost never restaurants in the (small) villages. If you ask about a restaurant you will sometimes be offered a meal. Sometimes you can also eat in a hotel without having to sleep there. Some cafes also offer sausages (mici) with bread. A typical drink that is always and everywhere offered is ţuica (pronounced tsoeika), a plum gin.

**Drinkable water**

Tap water is drinkable almost everywhere, but it is good to inquire on site. Bottled water is available in many shops. There is not always water without carbon dioxide. In the mountains, water is not a problem. There are many springs and you can drink from streams.

There are drinking water wells in many villages (2011). I was only ill once, when there was no drinking cup hanging by the well. For the rest it went fine, without filter or pills in it.

## **Other **

**Best time to cycle**

In summer it can be quite hot. Especially in the south and near the Black Sea. It is cooler in the mountain areas, but it also rains more there. This is often accompanied by thunderstorms. In the spring it is nice cycling weather. Even when the sun shines, it doesn't get too hot. However, the higher mountain passes, for example Pasul Urdele (2141 meters), are not open due to snow.

**Spare parts**

26 inch tires are available and if you look carefully, also 28 inch. Availability of other parts is a problem. Some bike shops also sell Shimano products, but not always the latest series. There are bicycle repair shops, but a large set for self-help, with a spare tire is not a bad idea.
