# Tongariro crossing

Even though you can not cycle this, doing the Tongariro crossing might be one the reasons why you've come to New Zealand. This 19,4 km hike crosses the famous Mount Ngauruhoe, better known as Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings, and gives away some stunning views. In good conditions it is possible to climb the volcano, but you can also walk passed it. In wintertime you need to prepare a little better with crampons and maybe even an icehax. The hike takes about 8 hours and you can't buy anyhting on the road, so prepare well.
