People
The people are friendly and very helpful. They are always ready to show the way and help with any other questions. They also look with amazement at those active cycling people, especially because it is so hot. The population mainly speaks Portuguese but with Spanish you come quite far as well.

Sleeping
Staying with locals
- With a hammock you can possibly sleep in people's homes. Hang out your hammock under a lean-to
- Wendy and Marten: "In the southern provinces (near Rio de Janeiro and more south) we were occasionally invited to people's homes. The hospitality is very different from Asia. People are (scared) by stories about robbery and manslaughter. "
(Formal) camping
- There are no campsites in the Amazon.
- Aaldrik and Sonya: "You can ask at any petrol station if you can camp. This will rarely, if ever, be refused. The advantage is that you have access to a toilet, water and often a shower. And it is free. Also. there is often 24-hour security, which benefits your night's sleep. "
- Aaldrik and Sonya: "There are many campsites on the coast, but they are often in a poor condition and are shockingly expensive (up to 20 euros for a tent and two people). someone puts up your tent and that you share the shower and toilet with the occupant of the house. "
Ho(s)tels
- Aaldrik and Sonya: "Hotels are very expensive (count on 30 to 40 euros for two people) and if you find a cheaper place to stay, then the quality is also appropriate."
Wild camping
Jurgen and Anke: "There is room for wild camping, but for safety reasons this does we don't recommend it."

Safety
- Jurgen and Anke (2005): "We thought Brazil was the most unsafe country where we cycled. In terms of feeling and stories, although nothing happened to us. We would not recommend cycling alone.
- Wendy and Marten (2006-2007): "The stories that the country is unsafe are endorsed by the population. However, we have not noticed anything, the south is even a pleasant area for cycling. Some roads are very dangerous (on the BR 101 NOT cycling) but with some searching there are many quiet roads. "
Traffic
In the North East of Brazil, many roads are well paved and often with a wide hard shoulder that is usually good for cycling. But you will also find many gravel and dirt roads. Especially the latter are difficult to ride. Fat tires are therefore useful, but also a map on which the off-road roads are indicated. (primary roads, secondary roads, gravel roads, ..)
Nature and animals
- In the Amazon you come across many barking dogs that do not bite.

Food and drink
Drinkable water
- There are restaurants in every village. Jurgen and Anke: "We had a great meal there, always for little money."
- The food is often prepared with a lot of hygiene: staff wear gloves, paper caps and sometimes even mouth masks.
- Drinking water from bottles is readily available everywhere.
- Wendy and Marten: "We cycled in the south and drank tap water everywhere. We were often offered cooled water in restaurants or at people's homes, with ice cubes! We never got sick. It tastes good in the big cities. sometimes to chlorine. "
