People

The Greeks are not really shy, but they will not really speak to you spontaneously. Although the younger generation generally speaks a word of English (sometimes German), you have to make do with sign language from time to time if your Greek is a bit rusty.

Transport

Train

You can take your bicycle with you on regional trains. In many cases, the bicycle has to be stored in a separate luggage compartment. Martin: My experience is that you are not allowed to take the bicycle with you on the train between Thessaloniki and Athens.

In the Athens metro, it is allowed to bring a bicycle (free of charge) (situation 2012) in the rear wagon and outside the morning rush hour. This is an easy way to cycle from the airport to the city center without having to cycle on busy (motor) roads.

Bus

The bicycle can usually also be taken on the bus. These run faster and more frequently than the train. It depends on the bus driver whether the bicycle is allowed. Doesj: "Our experience is that we had to pay a baggage surcharge on the buses where they easily took it. When we had to negotiate a lot and make theater, we didn't have to pay anything."

Boat

The boat is highly recommended for transport in Greece itself. It is a great feeling to combine a number of islands with the help of the boat connections. These are numerous and inexpensive. Watch out for departure times: it is perfectly possible that occasionally a connection is lost with respect to the folder, always check the correct departure times.

Food and drink

Food and drink is available everywhere, except in the somewhat sparsely populated areas. There is usually no shop in the smaller villages. In the slightly greener, you always have a shop to do some shopping.

Bread in Greece has the disadvantage that it is not very nutritious and that you cannot keep it for more than a day. If the baker has it, try to go for multigrain (8 or even 9 grains): slightly more expensive but tastier. In small villages it is often difficult to get bread, because baking is only done for the population. The baker only visits there once a week. So pay attention to the bakery car.

Vaccinations & health

No additional vaccinations required.

You have to watch out for stray dogs. Dogs on a leash don't really exist here. The legs that spin happily on the pedals are unresistible for most dogs,… Even shouting firmly can scare them away. If this fails, a “Dazer” is highly recommended, works very well (except for the 1% deaf dogs, ..) Keep in mind that it can get very hot in the summer.
