A spot where we all meet is the Alte Mainbrücke (‘Old Main Bridge’). In ever-happy mood we serve ourselves a glass of wine (locally: »Brücken-
schoppen«). Almost 7 centuries (1100–1800) this bridge was the only way to cross the river in Würzburg. In the 17th century we started putting up
statues of the holy founders of the city (Totnan, Colonat and Kilianus). Whether this was a forerunner of big brother watching over you or simply an act of
recognition of the cities Celtic influence, the today 12 statues are a real tourist magnet. If there are too many people gazing at the river and fortress at sun-
down, consider moving on to the Mainkai, a spot where students sit along the river, sipping their preferred drink. Psst: the view here is just as good and you’ll see the bridge as well. Check our cover for a taster!
