People

The people are friendly and interested, like to chat with you and want to know what you think of their country. Even politically sensitive topics such as the recent Balkan war can be discussed. Many would prefer to see the old situation again when it was still possible to live peacefully with the Croats and (Islamic) Bosnians.

There are no real dress codes, only in churches and monasteries, for example, long pants are appreciated.

The national language is Serbian. In addition, English is mainly spoken by young people. Some elderly people speak German. They used to work as guest workers in Germany.

(Formal) camping

Serbia has few official campsites. Many campsites have closed down or are hosting refugees. It is not known whether wild camping is legal, but it is doable.

Ho(s)tels

Prices of hotels and pensions range from 20 to 40 euros if you search a bit. However, most state hotels are in many cases in poor condition and date from the 1970s and have hardly changed with the times since then. It is often difficult, especially outside the tourist areas. The Serbian tourist office has a guide to all hotels in the country.

Safety

Serbia is safe in itself, even if you cycle alone. It is not known whether this also applies to Kosovo.

Traffic

Since Serbia is mainly a country of farmers, people are used to slow moving traffic (tractors and horse and carriage). Also, especially in the flat parts of the country, the population also cycles to get to the land. It is only busier around the large and larger cities, but cyclists are well taken into account. The greatest danger lies in the condition of the road surface, especially the manhole covers that are not flush with the rest of the asphalt. I therefore advise against cycling at night.

Transport

Boat

If you follow the Donauradweg towards Veliko Gradiste you will have to take the ferry over the Danube to Ram, which sails 3-5 times a day, depending on the season, and not always on time. You could be lucky or unlucky because of this. In Stara Palanka, however, you can easily relax by having lunch in one of the restaurants on the water. In March 2017, the crossing cost 300 dinars (about €2.40).

Vaccinations & health

Supermarkets and shops can be found everywhere in Serbia.

Due to the departure of many young people to the big cities, there is no longer a shop in every village, or it is only open to a limited extent, so don't wait until the next village to do your shopping. You have the best chance of a shop in villages that are at a crossroads of roads.
